The purpose of this workshop is to aid sport researchers to build workable and innovative research designs that incorporate sex- and gender-related variables and interpret findings in ways that advance the field. In addition to developing a strong conceptual foundation, the workshop will use a series of interactive case studies to explore the impact of different design choices. The workshop will adopt a novel and holistic approach to the study of sex- and gender-related variables, exploring their relevance to diverse populations including cisgender women, cisgender men and transgender athletes.
This workshop will be useful to early career researchers working across SEM fields, as well as to middle and later career researchers who are curious to discover innovative and workable ways of incorporating sex- and gender-related variables into their research programmes.
Workshop highlights will include moving beyond a singular focus on biological sex in the study of gender disparities in health, injury and performance; operationalising sex and gender in ways that move beyond proxy categories and towards concrete variables; exploring variation and distributions beyond a simple reliance on group means; understanding the relevance of sex- and gender-related variables to all study populations, including cisgender men; exploring the impact of design choices on results, such as in the definition and measurement of athlete exposure; and introducing research designs involving transgender athletes.

Location: UNIL Campus, Géopolis Building, Room 1628
The Géopolis building is on the University of Lausanne campus, accessible by foot from the UNIL-Mouline metro stop (line M1, from either Lausanne-Flon or Renens gare). It is also possible to take bus 31 from Renens gare, or bus 25 from the sous-gare area of Lausanne. Room 1628 is on the ground floor of the building. A cafeteria is also available on site, where a group lunch is planned for workshop participants.
