History

The European Journal of Sport Science (EJSS) was founded as the official scientific journal of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS) with a clear purpose – to provide an international platform for high-quality research in sport and exercise science.

From its beginnings, EJSS has reflected the broad and interdisciplinary nature of sport science. The journal publishes original research, reviews, and applied studies across five general fields – Applied Sport Sciences; Biomechanics & Motor Control; Physiology & Nutrition; Psychology, Social Sciences & Humanities and Sport & Exercise Medicine & Health.

A central aim has always been to connect fundamental research with applied practice, supporting both scientific progress and practical impact.

As the ECSS Community has grown, so too has the EJSS. What started as a European initiative has developed into a respected international journal, welcoming submissions from researchers across the world and contributing to important discussions shaping the field of sport and exercise science.

Throughout its history, EJSS has continuously evolved its editorial policies, peer-review standards, and publishing practices to ensure scientific quality, transparency, and relevance.

Close links with ECSS activities – including the Annual Congress, Expert Statements, and thematic initiatives – have helped the Journal stay closely aligned with the needs and priorities of the global sport science community.

Today, the EJSS is recognised as a leading outlet for innovative, interdisciplinary and impactful research. While remaining grounded in its original mission, EJSS continues to adapt to the changing landscape of sport science research and academic publishing.
