Fellowship

Serve as an ambassador for our College by becoming an ECSS Fellow

Fellows of the ECSS have made a significant contribution to the development of sport science through research and provide invaluable support for the College. ECSS Fellowship is approved by the Credentials, Awards & Tributes Committee, following an application process.

Applications can be submitted to office@sport-science.org within the Fellowship application window and must include:

Eligibility & application criteria

Within the application form:

  • Minimum of five years membership (consecutive years of membership are not required).
  • Participation in three out of last five Annual Congresses of the ECSS.
  • Specified number of publications (qualifying publications across all disciplines include international, peer-reviewed journal articles; monographs; edited books and chapters in edited books).
    • 15 publications (submitted as first or last author) for the disciplines of (a) Applied Sport Sciences; (b) Biomechanics & Motor Control; (c) Physiology & Nutrition; (d) Sport & Exercise Medicine & Health.
    • 8 publications (submitted as any author order) for the disciplines of Psychology, Social Science & Humanities.
  • Evidence of promoting the ECSS (eg, promoting membership, promoting Congress attendance, contributions to Congress programme, abstract reviewing, EJSS reviewing, supervision of YIA contestants – please provide specific examples).
  • Signed confirmation statement from two currently active ECSS Fellows. The statement forms are included in the final two pages of the application form.

Required supporting documents

Applicants must submit the following documents as separate files:

  • Cover letter (1–1.5 pages) (must be provided in addition to the completed application form and short CV; it should include a brief overview of how you have met the criteria and the contributions you can make to the ECSS if you are awarded Fellowship).
  • Short CV (2–3 pages; incl. reference to PhD level).
  • A high-resolution professional photograph of yourself suitable for use on the ECSS website and ECSS communications (JPG file, max. file size 2MB).

All applicants are kindly asked to also update their ECSS Account details (incl. their main research area) in case this information is outdated, as we will need this information (if the application is accepted) for our official Fellowship announcement and other communication channels.

Fellowship status

In accordance with current ECSS Bye-laws:

  • Fellows who do not pay their membership fees for two consecutive years will lose their ECSS Fellow status. Check ECSS Bye-laws for reinstatement procedure.

  • ECSS Fellows over the age of 70 are granted waived ECSS Membership (Lifelong Fellowship).

Role & expectations of ECSS Fellows

Our main expectation of Fellows is to champion ECSS and be an ambassador for the College. This could incorporate some of the following activities which support the College’s mission:

Disseminate high quality, innovative science

  • Submit a proposal for invited sessions or oral presentations at the Annual Congress
  • Support and actively promote the open abstract submission for the Annual Congress
  • Propose and conduct workshops at the Annual Congress
  • Actively promote, submit to and review for EJS

Empower the development of young scientists

  • Support and actively promote the ECSS Young Investigators Award
  • Serve as mentor for an Early Career Researcher within the ECSS Mentoring Programme

Build and retain an engaged ECSS community

  • Volunteer for upcoming positions within ECSS Boards and Committees
  • Take a Chairing responsibility at the Annual Congress
  • Provide signed confirmation statement for Fellowship applications

Opportunities for further involvement​

ECSS Fellows may further contribute to the College through participation in the following bodies:

ECSS Reviewing Panel

  • Review abstract submissions for the Annual Congress of the ECSS
  • Act as an expert reviewer for the European Journal of Sport Science
  • Ideally appointed from among ECSS Fellows and former winners of the ECSS Young Investigators Award

ECSS Scientific Committee

  • Provides advice to the Scientific Board
  • Supports the review and assessment procedures in the context of the ECSS Young Investigators Award
  • Members come from the Reviewing Panel and are ECSS Fellows

ECSS Scientific Board

  • Renders advice to the Executive Board with regard to all issues relating to scientific aspects of the working process and approach of the College
  • New members should be members of the Scientific Committee and be ECSS Fellow

ECSS Executive Board

  • Elected by ECSS members following a call for candidates

Procedure

  • Fellow applications are collected once per year by the ECSS Office within the application window (15 February – 15 March).
  • If the person fulfils all criteria, it will be viewed by the Credentials, Awards & Tributes Committee consisting of the President, Past President and Chair of the Scientific Board.
  • The list of successful applicants is subsequently reviewed by the Executive Board to complete the due diligence check.
  • All successful Fellow applicants will be notified by the ECSS with a personalised certificate and signature banner.
  • The database is updated and the new Fellow (when they have paid the annual membership) will appear on the ECSS website.
