In the build-up towards ECSS MetropolisRuhr 2017 ECSS office took in an intern to help out with the last-minute organisation and the smooth running of the congress onsite.

This was a fruitful experience for both parties and ECSS is delighted to be looking for an intern also for the next upcoming congress in Dublin, Ireland. Please find more information about the internship offer here.

Please read below about the experiences of the ECSS intern in 2017.

Internship report

The summer of 2017 was exciting for me because I was presented with the opportunity to do an internship with the European College of Sport Science office in Cologne, Germany. I became familiar with the organisation through visiting the annual congress in Vienna the previous year. As a Social Science of Sport student, I found the organisation very interesting and thought that working with ECSS could offer a great insight into event planning and management as well as the opportunity to work in an international working environment.

Starting the internship at the beginning of May, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I had ideas and I had set some goals for myself of what I would like to get more familiar with and gain more experience in. At the office I spent most of the time as a Marketing Assistant. I gained a lot of great insight into marketing and organising the exhibition for ECSS MetropolisRuhr 2017 congress. My tasks, however, weren’t solely limited to marketing. I had several projects of my own concerning the development of ECSS. The most rewarding experience at the office was being able to help everyone out in their projects. It gave me a ‘big picture’ perspective of how the office and organisation operates.

Needless to say, the most exciting experience was the congress week itself. I enjoyed seeing the congress, which everyone had been working towards for the last five years, finally come to fruition. It was fun to finally meet the exhibitors that I’d been in touch with over the previous months as well as engaging with delegates and enjoying the programme. The congress president compared the whole process to a marathon and the congress was like finally stepping over the finishing line. I felt like I was part of the group who helped the last few miles go smoother.

To summarise summer internship with ECSS, I look back at my time there with a smile on my face. I got what I hoped for and even more: great working experience that will definitely help me in the future and a new perspective. Additionally, I got to meet a lot of interesting people and was afforded the opportunity to network in the field of sport science. I hope to see many of those familiar faces again soon. Vilja Sipilä
