European College of Sport Science and the annual congress

The European College of Sport Science (ECSS) welcomes 3.000 participants to what promises to be a fantastic event, taking place at the Olympic sites right on top of Montjuïc overlooking Barcelona, the biggest congress in history of the European College of Sport Science - ECSS Barcelona 2013.

The ECSS is an international non-profit organization founded in Nice, France in 1995. Its purpose is the promotion of science and research, with special attention to the interdisciplinary fields of sport science and sports medicine. The ECSS associates scientists committed to the ECSS mission by individual membership. By organizing annual scientific congresses in collaboration with leading European sport science institutions the ECSS provides a networking platform to share your knowledge.

Host institution of the 18th annual congress – ECSS Barcelona 2013

The National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia, INEFC, is a higher education center set up by the Government of Catalonia whose mission is to train physical education and sports professionals and help them specialize and improve, as well as carrying out scientific research. Originally founded in 1975, INEFC joined the Barcelona Olympics’ spirit and moved to its current headquarters in Olympic ring area in 1992.

INEFC has two academic centers, one in Barcelona and one in Lleida, which are academically affiliated to the Universities of Barcelona and Lleida respectively. The courses offered by INEFC include the undergraduate degree in Physical Activity and Sports Science and over a dozen master’s degrees in various related fields as well as PhD programs. Continuous training and sports instructor qualification courses complete our academic offer. These campuses house a staff of over 100 lecturers with recognized experience in education and professional practice in various areas of physical education and sport. In 2011, these two campuses had 1,600 undergraduate students, over 300 postgraduate students and another 500 people taking part in our continuous education course.

Congress venue

INEFC is located in an excellent setting, right at the centre of the Olympic Ring on Montjuïc hill. Next door to some of the main tokens of Barcelona’s Olympic dream, such as Calatrava’s sculpture-like communication tower, the historical Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium or the beautifully built sports arena, Isozaki’s Palau Sant Jordi, INEFC benefits from the best of both worlds.

Young Investigators Award (YIA)

One of the key objectives of the ECSS is the promotion of junior scientists and the fostering of state-of-the-art research. For this purpose the ECSS established the Young Investigators Award (YIA).
Since the inauguration of the ECSS and its first annual congress in Nice, France in 1996, Mars Inc. as founding partner of the ECSS sponsors the YIA with generous cash prizes to support up-coming scientists. Young scientists have the opportunity of entering this prestigious competition for scientific excellence, where outstanding scientific work can be presented at the annual congress. A jury consisting of the ECSS Scientific Board and ECSS Scientific Committee grants the awards based upon an oral and poster presentation for the top ten presentations respectively. Each year the YIA Cocktails reunite all former YIA winners at the annual ECSS congresses – an ECSS-based network, uniting generations of sport scientists. Today many former YIA winners are still closely connected to the ECSS and even support the ECSS in its boards and committees. The award has functioned for previous YIA winners as a starting point of their scientific career.
