Fellows of the ECSS have made a significant contribution to the development of sport science through research and have supported the College immensely.

ECSS fellowship is approved by the Credentials, Awards & Tributes Committee, following an application process. Applications should be submitted to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and must include:

  • Covering letter
  • Short CV
  • PhD level
  •  Minimum of five years membership (consecutive membership is not required)
  • Participation in annual congress (three out of last five)
  • 10 papers in international, peer reviewed journals submitted as first or last author
  • Two letters of support from ECSS Fellows, see list of ECSS Fellows here
  • One page summarising evidence of promoting the ECSS (e.g. promote membership, promote congress attendance, contribution to congress programme, abstract reviewing, EJSS reviewing, supervision of YIA contestants)

Please note that according to the new by-laws:

1. Fellows who have not paid their membership fees in two years consecutively will lose their ECSS Fellow status.

2. ECSS Fellows over the age of 70 will receive a free ECSS Fellowship (membership).

ECSS also supports your career development through its freely available Job Vacancies and Events Calendar, the ECSS congress abstract database, and public video channel ECSS.tv, which hosts a wide variety of scientific presentations from each annual congress.

How do I become an ECSS member or renew my existing membership? 

To become a new member, please follow the steps to create a new member account here. Once you have set up your account, visit the secure membership page to select the membership category that applies to you.

From 2023, your ECSS membership will automatically renew for one year at a time. This means you will no longer need to log into your ECSS account to renew your membership. Renewals are processed in January every year. If you would like to opt out of your ECSS membership for the following year, you will need to cancel your ECSS membership within your ECSS account by 29 September of the present year. After opting out, your annual ECSS membership will continue until 31 December and will be cancelled thereafter. For more detailed information on this, please visit our updated bye-laws.

Membership requirements

To become an ECSS member, you must be 18 years of age or above. ECSS members usually hold a university-level degree in the field of sport and exercise science or its sub-disciplines.

Student members are entitled to all membership benefits and usually are undergraduate or postgraduate students in the field of sport and exercise science and its sub-disciplines.

Are you a student? If so, please enter your ECSS account, go to the section 'myMembership & Benefits' and click on the button 'myStudent Status' to upload your university student enrolment certificate in English language, including an expiration date for 2024 (or beyond).
