Share your knowledge – Japan and Europe celebrate 15 years of scientific exchange - MR 29.04.2013

The Japanese Society of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine (JSPFSM) and the European College of Sport Science (ECSS) celebrate the 15th anniversary of their first exchange symposium held at the 3rd annual congress of the European College of Sport Science – ECSS Manchester 1998. Ever since these two leading societies in sport science and sports medicine enjoy a vital and most fruitful collaboration.

Toshihito Katsumura, MD, PhD, coordinator of the exchange reflects, “I am pleased to express my appreciation that ECSS and JSPFSM celebrate the 15th anniversary of their first exchange symposium this year and these two leading societies have greatly contributed to sport science.

We are planning to invite two researchers, who were past ECSS YIA winners and had visited Japan prior to 2007, to the annual conference of JSPFSM in Tokyo in September. We are looking forward to hearing present activities regarding sport science.

I would like to tighten the mutual exchange between ECSS and JSPFSM and hope that they will continue to contribute to the development of international sport medicine and sport science into the future."

JSPFSM is invited to organise the JSPFSM-ECSS Exchange Symposium at the annual ECSS congress each year. In return the society is hosting the top three ECSS Young Investigators Award (YIA) winners of each year; inviting them to present their work at the JSPFSM annual congress in Japan. While the ECSS winners are enjoying generous hospitality during their visit the exchange has often been the starting point of excellent scientific collaborations.

Sally Fenton and Gaspare Pavei have been participating in the exchange in 2012. They have shared their experience with their colleagues from the ECSS in an online report YIA exchange to the 67th annual JSPFSM Meeting, read the report here.

A remarkable fact: Japan often is the strongest nation in sending congress delegates to the annual ECSS congress. Apart from an attractive programme and the opportunity to present their in Europe Japanese researchers enjoy the fact that the ECSS congress is organised in a different country in Europe every year. “If have been to the last 10 ECSS congresses, basically you have seen Europe”, a Japanese delegate reports with great enthusiasm.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary the Japanese exchange partner have invited two former YIA winner and exchange delegates to revisit Japan and present at the 68th annual JSPFSM congress to be held in September 21 – 23 in Tokyo, Japan. The ECSS has nominated Prof. Mette Hansen a YIA winner and exchange delegate in 2006 and Prof. Wolfgang Tauber, YIA winner and exchange delegate in 2004.
